[Whenever the wind picks up, or whenever a passerby strays too close--whenever there's raucous laughter, or honking cars, or sleigh bells going crazy on horse-drawn carriages--just whenever there's anything that makes Near feel unsafe, he clings that much tighter to Mello's arm. At this point, he has to be cutting off circulation, he thinks. At this point, he can't believe Mello hasn't pushed him away. They've carved out a space for themselves off of one of the major thoroughfares, but there are still moments when he turns his head inward, hiding it against Mello's strong, sturdy warmth. There are moments when he has to close his eyes and breathe and remember how, in spite of everything, Mello promised to look after him tonight.
And it's worth it, really.
The discomfort aside, the specifics of their rivalry aside, it's worth it to be out here tonight. Central Park at Christmastime is a wonder to behold, the mecca of holiday decorations, with just how many colorful lights are strung up everywhere, wrapped around everything, dangling down. They're standing in and among a grove of winter's bare trees, each and every one bejeweled from top to bottom in glowing white lights. Near slowly but surely relaxes again, and then he peeks at the particularly tall and bright tree in front of them. Like something out of a fairy tale. That's what it looks like.
The scarf tucked around his nose and his mouth is muffling him a little. He says,] Sorry. [Ruefully, he says,] Seems you're more patient than I give you credit for. [And then he says,] It's beautiful out here, isn't it? [It's just the two of them tonight.
